55 MW COAL POWER PLANT

Technical Description:

Pulverized Coal fired Power Station with 50 MWel / 50 Hz and 10.5 kV output

Characteristics of the power plant:

Fuel: The power station originally was designed to fire local lignite of low quality. Due to the
uneconomic coal production the unit was converted in 1994-1995 to burn import coal by modifying the
firing system. The plant can be easily converted back to lignite firing during relocation.

Building time: Conversion to hard coal firing and major overhaul: 1994-1995
Type of plant: condensation plant with fresh water cooling
Electrical output: 50 / 55 MW
Running hours: approx. 150’000 h
Fuel: hard coal, heavy fuel oil, conversion back to lignite possible
Coal quality: 25-29 MJ/kg, originally for lignite with appr. 10 MJ/kg
Consumtion: approx. 18-20 t/h
District heating load: 10 MWth
Boiler: double pass natural circulation boiler
Steam generation: 190 t/h
Live steam pressure: 90 bar
Live steam temperature: 530 °C
Design-pressure: 108 bar
Starts (cold/warm): 675 (179/496)

Power station and associated infrastructure

The main components of the power plant which will have a footprint of approximately 3 ha include
the following:

  • Boiler house and turbine hall for one 50 MW unit
  • Flue gas desulphurization plant incl. electrostatic precipitators
  • 80 meter high stack
  • Auxiliary plant buildings, including administration building and warehouse
  • Other operational support buildings
  • Maintenance workshops and storage facilities including electrical and instrument workshops and
    stores, and machine shop
  • Laboratory area for both routine testing and specialised analysis and investigation
  • Access roads

The associated infrastructure which will have a footprint of approximately 7 ha are as follows:

  • In-plant coal stock yard and storage (2ha) – coal is to be conveyed via overland conveyor and
    trucks from nearby coal mines.
  • Lime storage area (500m2)
  • Overland coal conveyors – from identified coal discard dumps in the area
  • Water supply pipeline (temporary or permanent)
  • Amenities including potable water, sanitary and sewer utilities
  • Electrical utility interconnection and telephone utilities
  • Sewage treatment plant (100m2)
  • Access road and internal roads
  • Ash disposal facility (2 ha for the first 5 years of operation)
  • Ash disposal facility runoff ponds (0.2 ha each)
